Viral Sounds: A Guide to Full Moon Festival
Essential Full Moon Music Festival Tunes
Lineup too obscure for you? Not sure who any of these people are? Part of the joy in trying something new is discovery. This playlist was curated by our team and aims to get you a taste of what you’ll be hearing at the festival on July 8th.
Vic Mensa – the Chicago-native discusses his hometown struggles and the current landscape through exquisitely delivered lyricism, while dreamy melodies provide a canvas for his message. He’s been around for a minute but has broken through last year, along his buddy Chance The Rapper.
Larry Heard aka Mr Fingers – this veteran DJ/producer is regarded as one of the pioneers of deep house and has enjoyed a prolific career in music. Chances are you’ve heard a few of his songs—including the most recently sampled in Kanye West’s Mystery Of Love.
Kelela – the Ethiopian-American singer and songwriter emerged in 2013, upon releasing her debut mixtape Cut 4 Me. Residing in LA, she hooked up with fellow artists, resulting in some of her most compelling work yet. She’s working on an album but her EP Hallucinogen is simply breathtaking.
DJ Harvey – for dance floor aficionados, this man needs no introduction. To many, he is the Keith Richards of dance music and provider of many sweaty nights under the disco ball. He’s known to DJ all night long and across a broad range of sounds. He also produces music with side projects Locusolus, Map of Africa, Wildest Dreams, and more.
Connan Mockasin – Connan Hosford’s looks are striking and some of his friends consider him a bit of an enigma. He’s come far from his home in New Zealand, touring with Charlotte Gainsbourg, Beck, Beach House, Radiohead and more. His dreamy, psychedelic pop is enthralling.
ABRA – pure talent and drive have put ABRA on the map. She comes from a family of missionaries who moved around a lot. This gave her a sense of non-belonging, which she poured into music. Today, she is fully self-sufficient. We can’t wait to hear more from her.
Jeremy Underground – a strong obsession with House Music at its purest form, who’s played dance floors around the world and back. His My Love Is Underground label provides the new generation with a much-needed history lesson.
Axel Boman – the Swedish DJ and producer broke through with Purple Drank, which became an instant hit in the clubs in 2010. Since then, he’s been consistently delivering great music via his label Studio Barnhus, his project with John Talabot (Talaboman) and numerous European imprints.
TOPS – This foursome hailing from Montreal is the perfect sundown soundtrack. Crooning since 2011, the synth-based rock group part of Arbutus Records is amongst the up and comers of the lineup.
Awesome Tapes From Africa – Music you literally won’t hear anywhere else. Brian Shimkovitz’s project features obscure musicians from Africa whose oeuvre has largely been lost or never discovered. He’s since then breathed new life into forgotten music and taken its authors out on world tours.
Salvagem – Hailing from the beautiful Sao Paulo, the duo comprised of DJs Millos Kaiser and Trepanado is responsible for keeping Brazil’s feet moving. Their namesake parties and productions have seen worldly success.
Donna Leake – she’s in charge of curating programming at London’s most esteemed audiophile bar, Brilliant Corners, and has been gathering steam since last year’s Boiler Room appearance. Prepare for heavy vibes thanks to Donna.
